Biography

The unknown fate of Salomon Roos, Veronica Roos-Frank and their children Saartje, Salomon and Catharina.

Salomon Roos was a son of Levie Roos and Sara Binger. He was born on 24 December 1893 in Rotterdam as the youngest into a family of seven children in total. His siblings were Roosje, Heiman, Maria, Jacob, Heijman and Alida.

Levie Roos, father of the family, was a retailer in ready-to-wear. Already in March 1919 he left Rotterdam for Antwerp and lived there many years with his family. Sara Binger, mother of the family, passed away already before 1923, and her widower Levie Roos remarried in July 1924 the non-Jewish Ardina Maria den Teuling from Den Bosch. Presumably, Levie Roos has died in Antwerp before 1933.

Of the children of Levie and Sara is the following known: Roosje was murdered in Auschwitz on 6 September 1944; Heiman died on 3 February 1882 in Rotterdam, only 4 months old; unclear is whether Maria died during the Shoah or that she has survived the horrors of Bergen Belsen; Jacob was deported from Mechelen to Auschwitz with convoy VIII (8) and was murdered there on 11 September 1942; it is not known of Heijman and his family have survived the war or not and Alida passed away in Antwerp on 23 August 1930, 41 years of age.

Salomon Roos married in Schaerbeek (Belgium) on 7 April 1920 Veronica Frank,  also called Veronique. She was a daughter of Salomon Frank and Catharina Frank and was born on 18 October 1896 in Rotterdam. Salomon, as a merchant and commercial traveller, moved to various other European cities: he lived among others in Monaco, Brussels, Paris, Berlin and Antwerp, from where he was registered in 1926 in Den Haag with his wife and daughter Saartje.

Salomon and Veronica had three children together, namely Saartje on 9 March 1921 who was born in the Principality of Monaco. Then followed their son Salomon on 31 October 1926. He was born in Paris and their third child was Catharina, who was born on 21 September 1928 in Brussels. On 12 June 1934 Salomon Roos and his wife and three children moved from Antwerp to Sint Joost ten Node, located in the capital region of Brussels. Not known is whether the family afterwards still have lived elsewhere or not.

The Memorial of the Deportation of the Belgian Jews made clear that the family of Salomon Roos – except Saartje – has been deported from Mechelen to Auschwitz, prison-numbered with no’s 79, 80, 81 and 82, with Convoy IXX (19) on 15 January 1943. This convoy of in total 1555 deportees arrived in Auschwitz on 18 January 1943. 1087 persons were immediately gassed in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Of the remaining others, only a few will survive in the end.

This means that Veronica Frank and the two children Salomon and Catharina Roos probably might have been murdered immediately upon arrival in Auschwitz on 18 January 1943. However Salomon Roos could have been lost his life on another date. But due the lack of official declarations of death and documents, it is not known where and on what exact date they have died. About their daughter Saartje nothing is further known.
