Calmeyer

Dr Hans Calmeyer was a German lawyer who worked within the occupation government during the occupation.

As head of the Abteilung Innere Verwaltung [Department for Administration of the Interior] (Generalkommissariat für Verwaltung und Justiz [General Commission for Administration and Justice]), Hans Calmeyer became involved in the persecution of the Jews. He coordinated the compulsory registration of everybody of Jewish heritage. He also resolved cases of doubt concerning (Jewish) lineage and – along those lines – registrations. Quite a few persons registered as Jews tried to escape persecution by claiming that their registration was incorrect and presented Calmeyer with petitions to change their registration. Calmeyer granted requests, even some based on forged documents, but denied several as well.
