Saartje Slagter was a daughter of Barend Mozes Slagter and Grietje Abraham Trijbits. She was born in Rotterdam on 30 December 1858 and lived at home with her parents in the Breedstraat 223 and in the Kipstraat 81, till she left her parental home in 1888 to be married on 20 June 1888 in Rotterdam to Levie Velleman, born 28 December 1864 in Alkmaar as son of Berend Levi Velleman and Saartje van Dal. After the wedding, the couple went living in Schagen, from where they left in 1889 to Alkmaar.

Levie Velleman was previously married, namely on 15 August 1886 to Betje Buitenkant, who was born on 25 October 1863 in Den Helder as daughter of Izaak Machiel Buitenkant and Esther Gompel Katwijk. Levie and Betje had two children together: in 1887 a stillborn son in Schagen and on 3 February 1888 Barend, who died already after two days in Schagen. On 23 Februari 1888 Levie Velleman got widowed: his wife Betje Buitenkant passed away and was interred in the Jewish Cemetery in Den Helder.

Saartje Slachter had eight children with Levie Velleman, namely Barend in 1889 in Schagen, Mozes Barend in 1890 in Rotterdam, Grietje in 1892 in Amsterdam, Hartog in 1893 in Amsterdam, Joseph in 1894 in Purmerend, Alida in 1896 in Purmerend, Betsy in 1898 in Haarlem and again a Betsy in 1902 in Haarlem. Betsy, who was born in 1898, died already after four months on 5 October 1898. Of the other children is known that Barend, Betsy II and Saartje Slagter self were killed during the Shoah.

Levie Velleman was a merchant and moved several times from town to town. His last residence was in Haarlem, where he passed away on 10 September 1923 and he was interred in the Jewish Cemetery in Haarlem, Amsterdamsevaart.

Saartje Velleman-Slagter lived in Haarlem till 1941; then she moved to Amsterdam, where she was registered on 7 March 1941 at the address Plantage Parklaan 9b-upperhouse, where Pension Beis Jisroeil (Jewish Our Home – Ons Huis) was established. On 29 May 1942 she moved again to Nieuwe Heerengracht 121 1st floor, located in the old city centre of Amsterdam.

For unknown reasons it appeared, that Saartje Slagter was not registered with the Jewish Council, which was mandatory since early 1941. Eventually she was still taken and carried off to Westerbork from where she was deported to Auschwitz on 25 September 1942. Saartje Slagter, aged 83-year, was immediately killed upon arrival there on 28 September 1942.
