Loods 24 - Deportations from Rotterdam.

Loods 24 was a port warehouse on the site of the Municipal Commercial Establishments between the Binnenhavenm (Inner port) and the Spoorweghaven (Railway port) in Rotterdam. The shed was used for the storage of tobacco. During the Second World War it was used by the Germans as a meeting place for the deportation of Jews.

In 1941, 11,000 Jews still lived in Rotterdam. Before the war this was 13,000. Between 30 July 1942 and 22 April 1943, 6,790 people were deported via Loods 24 in 8 transports. The majority of the Jews who were deported via Loods 24 were murdered in Sobibór and Auschwitz-Birkenau. Research in 2000 showed that 144 people survived the deportations.

On 29 July, 2,000 Jews were called up for the Arbeitseinsatz. The next day on 30 July 1942, 1,100 people reported to Loods 24 at six o'clock, among them certainly also Betje Cohen-Nenk and her daughter Louise Lucienne Cohen. They were transported in twenty passenger wagons to Camp Westerbork in the middle of the night. On the second call for Sunday 2 August 1942, 800 Jews came forward, at the third call only 500. In September 1942, Jews were picked up by raids if they did not report themselves.

On 4 October women and children of Jewish labourers who were in the labor camps were picked up. A few days later, on 8 October 1942, Jewish Rotterdammers aged 60 years and over were transported to Camp Westerbork and deported from there to the extermination camps.

On 26 February 1943, the Jewish orphanage, the Jewish retirement home at Claes de Vrieslaan and the Jewish hospital at Schietbaanlaan were evacuated: 269 orphans, sick and elderly were transported to Westerbork.

On 22 April 1943, the last dozen Jews in South Holland, including the members of the Jewish Council office in Rotterdam, had to report to Vught. In the summer of 1943, the remaining Portuguese Jews had to leave. In 1944 another 254 detainees, mostly Jews in hiding, were handed over to the Germans.
