Biography

About Saloon Cohen, his wife Marie Evalina Peper and their three children.

Salomon Cohen was the fourth child of Hartog Cohen from Leeuwarden and Marianne Sitters from Gorinchem. He was born in Leiden on 8 January 1906. When Salomon was still unmarried, he worked as cigar dealer, warehouse clerk and shop manager of a cigar store in Leiden. He was in possession of his retailer’s diploma and his school diploma MULO. In addition to that, he was also experienced as youth leader and he possessed a Gilwell diploma, which he graduated from the scouting. And he was also qualified as a religious teacher.

His 3-year older brother Izak Hartog Cohen was appointed as administrator at De Bergstichting since 17 January 1928, a Jewish childrens home in Laren (N.H.) which was located at Doodweg 4. It is not impossible that Izak asked his brother Salomon to join De Bergstichting to work there as an educational officer. On 10 april 1930 he moved to Laren and lived there between 1930 and 1937 at Doodweg 1, Klaaskampen 15 and Engweg 8.

Those years he got also acquainted with his future wife Marie Evalina Peper. She was a daughter of Wolf Peper and Rebekka de Jong and was born in Hilversum on 23 October 1908. She lived with her parents in the Daltonstraat 31 in Amersfoort. On 20 November 1933 they married there and after the wedding, Marie Evalina joined her newly wed husband at the Engweg in Laren.

The couple had three children, namely Hartog Izaak, who was born 8 November 1911 and Wolf Ithomar on 13 April 1936, both born in Laren. On 18 December 1937 the family moved from Laren to Amersfoort, where they came living again in the Daltonstraat 31. There, on 14 June 1938 their 3rd child Marjan Rebekka was born.

On 19 February 1943 a forced removal followed from Amsterdam to Transvaalkade 113 1st floor in Amsterdam-East. There, the entire family was arrested and carried off to Westerbork during the large-scale and secretly prepared raid of Sunday 20 June 1943. With another rounded up 5500 Jews the arrived in Westerbork where Salomon ended up in barrack 60 and Marie Evalina and her three children in barrack 65.

On 29 June, they were all put on transport to Sobibor and upon arrival there on 2 July 1943 immediately killed in the gas chambers there.
