About the fate of Barend Beek.

Barend Beek, a son of Louis Beek, who has been killed  too in 1943 in the Shoah, and the in 1932 already deceased Sara Abraham, married 5 September 1934 in Amsterdam the in Salzhemmendorf in Germany born Marie Louise Dorette Sophie Sagebiel and had together a daughter, Renate.

The family lived at Boterdiepstraat 19 2nd floor in Amsterdam-South. In connection with work he did for the Dutch resistance, Barend was arrested on 27 September 1943 but was released by de SS on 26 April 1944. Nevertheless, Barend ended up one month later, on 26 May 194 in Westerbork were he was locked up as a penal case in penal barrack 67 On 3 September 1944, Barend has been deported with the last transport from Westerbork to Auschwitz.

On arrival there on 6 September, Barend wasn’t sent to the gaschambers but put to work as a forced labourer. Some time later, he was sent from Auschwitz to concentration camp Stutthof near Dantzig, where he ended up eventually in the Extern Command (Aussenkommando) Burggraben. According to a statement of 12 December 1944 by SS Oberscharfüher and Lagerfürer Wensel, Barend lost his life there on 11 December 1944. His corpse was cremated in the Dantzig-Langfurt crematorium and his ashes scattered.

After the was, the Dutch Ministery of Justice has established that Barend Beek died in Mid Europ on 15 March 1945. They ordered the City of Amsterdam to draw up a certificate of death for Barend Beek, in which was recorded that he died 15 March 1945 in Mid Europe. (City Archvie of Amsterdam, register A96-folio 92verso – certificate nr. 540 dated 24 July 1952).

Therefore, these date of death and place were recorded in the previous website of Digital Monument and copied in the new Joods Monument. However, based on the evidence of the list of deaths from 11 December 1944, on which Barend Beek occurs as Berndt Beck, the date of death and place has been adjusted to died on 11 December 1944 in the Extern Kommando Burggraben .
