Biography

About Izaak Frank and his wife Rebekka van der Stam.

Izaak Frank, born 30 May 1878 in Rotterda, was a son of Wilhelm Frank and Marianna Wijmar. He married Rebekka van der Stam in Rotterdam on 16 October 1901, a daughter of David van der Stam and Johanna de Reeder. Rebekka was born in Rotterdam too on 9 Augusat 1878.

The couple had eight children, namely Wilhelm, David, Mozes, Marianna, Meijer, Jacob and the twin Henriette and Joseph. Three children, Meijer, Jacob and Henriette have died alreay in childhood. Wilhelm, Mozes, Marianna and Joseph survived the Holocaust. However, their son David has been killed during the Shoah.

After their marriage, Izaak and Rebekka lived in Diergaardestraat 4A in Rotterdam. After another ten moves in the city, they ended up 1 July 1936 in Van Oldebarneveltstraat 33B. Their last known address however was Rosier Faassensgtraat 35 in Rotterdam, from where they have been taken and carried off to Westerbork in October 1942.

Since June 1942, when the arrest of Jews in Rotterdam began, many Jews did not respond to the calls for provision of additional work in Germany. Of the 2000 people called in, initially more than half came; of a second series calls less than half and of a third series calls only about a quarter. With that, the SS and Gestapo in Rotterdam were not satisfied and they decided to go to raids.

On October 9, 1942 there was a so-called "street-raid", of which the "yield" was not high because bearers of the Star of David (Jodenster) were warned by people passing by. But on 3 October in the night of 8/9 October 1942 the people were taken from their homes with the help of the Dutch police. When the police agents or nazis were in the house, the residents were given ten minutes to pack and were then taken to Loods 24 by bus or tram.

Similarly, Isaac Frank and his wife Rebekka van der Stam were deported to Westerbork where they were put on transport on 6 November 1942 to Auschwitz. On arrival there on 9 November they were both immediately killed.
