Biography

About Abraham de Leeuw and his family.

Abraham de Leeuw, born 8 January 1863 in Harlingen as son of Mannes de Leeuw and Johanna van der Woude, married 26 May 1887 in Lemsterland Betje Zeehandelaar, aged 26, a daughter of Salomon Zeehandelaar and Kaatje Frankfort. The couple had in total eight children, of whom four children have died at young age; one daughter survived the Holocaustf and three sons were killed in the Shoah.

Their daughther Johanna, who survived the Holocaust together with her husband Mozes Brest, had three children: Abraham and Betty, both born 27 December 1922 and Salomon on 12 August 1918. Betty survived the war and returned to Amsterdam with her parents and up from 1946 they came to live at Nieuwe Achtergracht 83 3rd floor. However the children Salomon and Abraham Brest were killed in Auschwitz.

The eldest son Salomon de Leeuw married 16 May 1922 Rosette van Herpen, a daughter of Mozes van Herpen and Sara Dingsdag. They had two sons, Abraham and Moritz. The family lived at Molenbeekstraat 2 1st floor in Amsterdam. Salomon’s father Abraham de Leeuw, who was widowed since 1932, lived in at that address too with his son’s family but passed away still in Amsterdam. Salomon, his wife Rosette and both their sons were killed during the Shoah in Auschwitz.

The second son Hermanus de Leeuw married 11 June 1919 Selina Voorzanger, a daughter of Salomon Voorzanger and Sara Polk. They too had two sons, Salomon and Abraham. All were killed during the Shoah in Auschwitz

Jacobus de Leeuw, the youngest child of Abraham and Betje de Leeuw, married 15 December 1921 in Amsterdam Maria Wolff, a daughter of David Wolff and Clara Jessurun Lobo. Jacobus and Maria had two children, namely David in 1923 and Betty in 1930. Maria Wolff and her daughter Betty de Leeuw survived the Holocaustf. Jacobus de Leeuw and his son David have lost their lives somewhere in Mid Europe on 31 March 1944.

Abraham’s spouse Betje Zeehandelaar passed away in Amsterdam on 10 February 1932 and was interred in the Jewish Cemetery at Muiderberg (C-73-35). Her husband Abraham de Leeuw passed away at the age of 78 on 5 April 1941 in Amsteram and was interred too in the Jewish Cemetery at Muiderberg and was buried next to his wife (C-73-36)
