Biography

About Joseph Roodenburg.

Joseph Roodenburg was a son of David Roodenburg and Hendrika Engelsman. He had six other siblings, namely Hijman, Sara, Geesje, Abraham, Benjamin en Matthijs. Hijman, born 4 May 1895 passed 13 May 1931; Sara and Matthijs survived the war, just as Geesje Roodenburg. Her husband Andries Wurms and two of her children were killed in the Holocaust. Joseph passed away in 1941 in Amsterdam but Benjamin and Abraham were killed in the Shoah.

Joseph Roodenburg married 25 August 1915 in Zaandam his cousin Sara Roodenburg, a daughter of Abraham Roodenburg and Rachel Cohen. On 27 November 1916 their daughter Hendrika was born. The marriage however ended in a divorce on 30 September 1921.

Joseph and Sara lived at Tilanusstraat 81 in Amsterdam, where in 1916 their daughter was born. In 1917 the family went to Weesperstraat 55 3rd floor. After his divorce in 1921 Joseph stayed at Weesperstraat till he moved 2 August 1924 to Huis Polak at Weidestraat 34. Thereafter ten relocations have followed, where he mostly ended up with relatives and family, untill 29 April 1932 he could go to his 10-year younger brother Abraham Roodenburg, who lived with his wife Rosa Kraal and son Henri at Riouwstraat 29 ground floor. On 2 November 1932 Joseph moved with the family of Abraham Roodenburg to Insulindeweg 17 groundfloor in Amsterdam East.  

Joseph Roodenburg passed away in Amsterdam 29 January 1941. It is not known where he was buried.
