Biography

About David Wagenhuizen and his wife Cecilia Jacobs.

David Wagenhuizen was born in London 19 November 1877 as third of the eight children of Jacob Wagenhuizen and Rebecca Witmond. His siblings, who were born in London too were Rachel (1874), Morris (1876), Barend, also known as Barnett (1879), Simon (1881), Bella (1882), and born in Amsterdam were Eva (1886) and Bertha (1888). His sibs Barend and Bella died already before the war but the others were all killed during the Holocaust.

On 12 February 1902 David Wagenhuizen was married in Amsterdam to Cecilia Jacobs, a daughter of Salomon Jacobs and Eva van Praag. After their marriage, the Wagenhuizens left for Antwerp, where in 1903 their son Jacob was born in the sub-municipality of Borgerhout. He died however already 19 February 1908.

Early 1905 David and Cecilia Wagenhuizen returned to Amsterdam where again three sons were born: Samuel in August 1905, Maurits in December 1908 and Willem in April 1921. Samuel Wagenhuizen survived the Shoah, he died 19 December 1985 in Amsterdam. However Maurits was killed 23 Juni 1942 in Mauthausen and Willem 30 September 1942 in Auschwitz.

Since 1905 the Wagenhuizen family lived in Amsterdam at various addresses but on 2 March 1936 they were registered at the address Tilanusstraat 36 1st floor. From this address David and Cecilia were taken on 29 September 1942 to Westerbork and 2 October put on transport to Auschwitz. On arrival there 5 October 1942, both were immediately killed.
