Biography

About Benjamin Cohen and his family.

Benjamin Cohen, cabinet maker by trade, was a son of Abraham Cohen and Saartje van Coeverden. He married Henriette van Buren 27 March 1928 in Dedemsvaart, municipality of Avereest, a daughter of David van Buuren and Betje Philipson. The couple had two children: Abraham in 1929 and Betje in 1932. She has survived the Shoah.

Henriette van Buren worked as servant maid. She lived in Dedemsvaart but left for Zandvoort in the early twenties, where she stayed till 1924. 16 April 1924 she arrived in Amsterdam and lived at Transvaalstraat 45 3rd floor. 20 May 1925 she left for Avereest to return again in Amsterdam 24 August 1926, address ‘s-Gravesandeplein 3 ground floor.1 February 1928 she left Amsterdam for Avereest again for getting married there to Benjamin Cohen 27 March 1928.

After the wedding Benjamin and Henriette lived at Marcusstraat 13 3rd floor in Amsterdam-East, where  both their children were born. Benjamin, his wife Henriette and son Abraham were deported 15 July 1942 to Westerbork and put on transport to Auschwitzn 21 July. On arrival there 23 July 1942, Henriette and Abraham were immediately killed.

On the other hand, Benjamin was registered in the camp and probably selected for some work. The Jewish Council in Amsterdam received the message, which has been taken down on his registration card “that according list R643, page 13, Benjamin Cohen has died in Auschwitz on 15/16 August 1942”.
