The "Houtmarkt" in Amsterdam

The "Houtmarkt" was a square in the Jewish quarter in Amsterdam. It was originally named 'Deventer Houtmarkt'. In the 19th century the name was changed tinto "Jonas Daniël Meijerplein", after Jonas Daniël Meijer (1780-1834), the first Jewish lawyer in The Netherlands. The 14th of August 1942, during the German occupation, the name was changed into "Houtmarkt" on order of Mayor Voûte, as part of renaming of streets which were named after Jewish persons. Immediately after the liberation in 1945, the name has changed again into Jonas Daniël Meijerplein.
