Biography

About Hartog Barend Velleman.

Hartog Barend Velleman, laborer, was a son of Barend Hartog Velleman and Carolina Strauss. 16 October 1901 he married Mietje van Zanten in Rotterdam, a daughter of Juda van Zanten from Rotterdam and Annetje Droomer from Sommesldijk. Out of this wedlock two children were born, namely Carolina in 1902 and Juda in 1903.

However, two monhts after the birth of her 2nd child Juda, Mietje Velleman-van Zanten passed away 30 December 1903, and Hartog Barend Velleman married again 26 June 1907 in Amsterdam Elsje van Kleef, daughter of Joseph van Kleef and Mietje Stodel. From this marriage, their daughter Mietje was born in 1908.

15 March 1938 also Hartog’s 2nd wife Elsje van Kleef passed away, at the age of 62. She was interred in the Jewish Cemetery Toepad in Rotterdam.

26 April 1939, Hartog Barend Velleman married the 3rd time to Maria Sitters, a daughter of Levie Sitters and Grietje van Gelder. Maria was previously married to Mozes Ephraim but divorced him 2 March 1938. She has survived the war.

Hartog Velleman moved 20 April 1938 from Marsmanstraat 77a to Lange Pannekoekstraat 41a, where Maria Sitters after her marriage to Hartog Velleman, came to live in too. During the bombardment of Rotterdam at 14 May 1940, the Lange Pannekoekstraat was destroyed and lost, so Hartog Velleman was in need to find another dwelling elsewhere. He found room at Snellemanstraat 36 (the Old North district), in the Weiman family of his daughter Carolina, from where he was deported (probably 4 August 1942 – together with the Weimanfamily) to Camp Westerbork. 19 October 1942 he was put on transport to Auschwitz and upon arrival there 22 October 1942, Hartog Barend Velleman was immediately killed.
