Biography

The fate of Sara Overste.

Sara Overste was a daughter from the 2nd marriage of he father Samuel Overste (son of Simon Overste and Elisabeth Simons), and Esther Overste, (daughter of Joseph Overste and Sara Finsij).  It was a marriage between first degree cousins.

Sara Overste was unmarried. She lived with her parents at Blasiusstraat 13 1st floor in Amsterdam. 10 April 1936 her mother passed away; her father remarried in September 1936 Fijtje Blitz, who came living in at Blasiusstraat 13 1st floor too. Her father’s marriage seemed not to go wel and 30 August 1940 she left her parental home to go to her uncle Samuel Overste, a brother of her mother who lived at Nieuwe Prinsengracht 112 downfloor. She stayed there till 4 November 1940 and returned then to Blasiusstraat 13 1st stock again.

1 September 1941, when her father and her stepmother lived already separated, her father moved to Weesperstraat 38 2nd stock and Sara came with him. (The divorce of her father was registered in the Civil Registry 19 September 1941). Sara stayed with her father at Weesperstraat 38 II till 21 April 1942 as per this date she moved again as she has found an "employment" elsewhere in Amsterdam.

Sara Overste was seamstress and servant maid and she arrived at the address Nicolaas Maesstraat 93 upperhouse where the garment manufacturer (factory in the dwelling) Meijer Druijf from Meppel lived, who was married to Grietje Oesterman from Amsterdam. It looks like Sara has applied to an advertisement in the Jewish Weekly (Het Joodsche Weekblad) of 27 February 1942, when Mrs. Druijf asked for a maid for the day or day-and-night. So 21 April 1942 Sara Overste was registered at Nicolaas Maesstraat 93 upperhouse, so it may be assumed she came there for day-and-night.

However, Meijer Druijf and his wife Grietje Oesterman were deported 25 September 1942 from their address Nicolaas Maesstaat in Amsterdam to Westerbork and three days later, 28 September put on transport to Auschwitz and upon arrival there, 1 October 1942 immediately killed.

Sara Overste was de-registered 6 October 1942 from Nicolaas Maesstraat 93 to Nieuwe Prinsengracht 110 3rd stock. Her mother Esther Overste passed already in 1936; her father Samuel Overste and stepmother Fijtje Blitz were arrested and deported 7 September 1942 but because of this removal, she came living again close to her remaining family, her uncle Samuel Overste and his wife, who lived at nr. 112 down floor.

Sara’s uncle Samuel was compositor by trade for the Joodsche Weekblad (Jewish Weekly) and he and his wife were exempted from deportation until further notice, because of his function. Sara’s aunt Maria Batavier died 6 May 1943 in Amsterdam; her uncle was deported three weeks later to Westerbork and stayed in barack 60. 1 June her uncle was put on transport to Sobibor were he was killed immediately upon arrival there 4 June 1943.

Sara self ended up eventually 25 August 1943 in Westerbork too, stayed in (penal)barack 67, till she was put on transport 31 August to Auschwitz and upon arrival there 3 September 1943, she has been immediately killed.
