The fate of Gerson Gans, Dina Rodrigues and their children.

Gerson Gans, a lump sorter, was a son of Elias Gans and Mijntje Schuit. 27 June 1917, at the age of 18 he married in Amsterdam the 19-year old Dina Rodrigues, a daughter of Jacob Rodrigues and Heintje Fransman. The couple had six children, namely Meintje in 1919, Jacob in 1921, Joseph in 1924, Heintje in 1926 en Elias in 1928. March 1923, their son Elias, born in November 1922 died, nearly four months old.

The family of Gerson Gans and Dina Rodrigues and their five children, lived at Lepelstraat 62 3rd stock in Amsterdam. Only their son Jacob was married: he wed 8 July 1941 Sara Schijvenschuurder in Amsterdam, a daughter of Isidorus Schijvenschuurder from Antwerp and Sientje van Praag of Amsterdam. After their marriage, Jacob and Sara lived in with Jacob’s parents at Lepelstraat 62 3rd-stock, back part of the house, where 21 August 1942 their son Gerson was born.

24 February 1943, Gerson Gans and his wife Dina, together with their children Heintje and Elias were sent to concentration camp Vught. Already more than a week before this event, on 12 February 1943 their daughter Meintje was deported to Camp Vught too. Their married son Jacob, together with his wife Sara Schijvenschuurder and their just born babyson Gerson were also transferred 16 March 1943 to “Lager” Vught. There, after one month, 27 April 1943 their little son Gerson died, eight months old.

Joseph Gans however, was put on transport 5 October 1942 from Westerbork to Auschwitz. This transport included 2012 persons, involving the first deportation of 10.000 persons from the Jewish work camps. 550 person had to leave the train at Kosel. Presumably also Joseph Gans, who ultimately ended up in Bergen Belsen where he lost his life 31 May 1945.

The other members of the Gerson Gans family were all transferred from Camp Vught to Westerbork 3 July 1943 and had to stay in barack 57. Three days later, 6 July they were put on transport to Sobibor, where they were killed immediately upon arrival there 9 Julyu 1943.
