Double portrait

Portrait of Nanette and Herman Jack van Praag Sigaar by Bernard Franssen.

This double portrait was made in 1941 and depicts Nanette (Nannie) van Praag Sigaar and her younger brother Herman Jack. Their father, Salomon van Praag works for an Insurance company and their mother, Sophie Barklo, is a teacher. The family lives in the Frans van Mierissstraat in Amsterdam. On the 30th of October 1942, Sophie and her children have to report for deportation to Westerbork. Soon after, they are deported to Auschwitz and killed upon arrival on November 5th 1942. Nanette is 13 years old, her brother 11. Their father is deported later in 1942 and dies on December 15th 1942 in camp Monowitz.

The double portrait is on display in the exhibition in the National Holocaust Museum.
