Sophia van Esso was the daughter of Benjamin van Esso and Grietje Koren. Since 1926 she was the deputy-director of the Nedelands-Israëlitisch Ziekenhuis (Dutch-Jewish Hospital) in Amsterdam. She was in charge of the nursing department.
