About Charles Polak

Before the war, Charles Polak was a secretary for the Dutch Zionist League. He suffered from leukemia for which he received treatment in Amsterdam. During his military service he had the rank of (reserve-)captain. Charles Polak died in Bergen-Belsen as a consequence o f a pneumonia. In her published memories 'Ik zal je beschrijven hoe een dag er hier uitziet' Mirjam Bolle wrote how on 20 February 1944 a hesped (memorialspeech) was held. According to Bolle Abel Herzberg, who after the war wrote one of the first Dutch books about the persecution of the Jews during the war, spoke 'simple and good'.
