Saartje Levie was a daughter of Eliazar Levie and Betje Hartog. She took care of her parents. Following their deaths in early 1940, she moved from Zuidland to Amsterdam, where she married Jezajas van Dam (known as Sjaak). The couple spent a while in hiding at the home of the widow Aaltje Troost, a girlfriend of Saartje's from her time in Zuidland. Aaltje Troost lived with her children in Ittersum near Zwolle. The hiding place became too dangerous, and Saartje and her husband had to leave.
