About Simon Gaarkeuken

Simon Gaarkeuken was a son of Magiel Gaarkeuken and Grietje van Hessen. 20 June 1900 he married in Haarlem Duifje Peper from Amsterdam, a daughter of Salomon Peper and Betje van Hessen. The couple had two children: in 1901 their daugter Elisabeth was born in Haarlem however, she died 28 March 1902, only 10 months old. 3 February 1903 their son Michiel Simon was born.

Simon was born into a family with eleven children in total. However, three children were stillborn, in 1872, 1873 and 1875. A baby-son Izaak died in 1874, six months old. Two daughters, namely Roosje and Naatje and a son Marcus have died already before the war (resp. 1937, 1934 and 1926).  Three children Gaarkeuken were killed in the Shoah: Wolf, his sister Elisabeth and brother Salomon. 

Simon Gaarkeuken self, born 21 October 1869 in Haarlem, passed away there 3 March 1941 and the funeral records at the Jewish cemetery in Haarlem reveal that Simon Gaarkeuken was buried there.
