About Samuel Henri van Gelder

Samuel Henri van Gelder was a son of Machiel van Gelder from Amsterdam and Sarah de Roos from Paris. On 6 November 1923 he married in Antwerpen the non-Jewish Maria Theresia Verelst. In 1927 they had a son Herman Henri van Gelder, who has survived the war. Also Samuel Henri's spouse survived the war.

Samuel Henri van Gelder has been deported however from Mechelen to Auschwitz with Convoy VIII, departing from Mechelen on 8 September 1942 and arriving at Auschwitz on 10 September 1942. This convoy has made a stop at Kozel, where 281 men have been forced to step out of the train; they have been "employed" in the force labor camps in that region. Whether Samuel Henri van Gelder was part of this group or not is not known. He might have been sent to Auschwitz where he has been killed at some point. An official date of death and place is because of this, not known.

Samuel Henri van Gelder had an elder brother Jacob, who also has been killed in the Shoah and a sister Angeline, who has survived the war.
