Arnold Louis (Nol) Swartberg's father was one of the directors of the trading company N.V. Joz. Swartberg Handelsmij. Nol was born in Rotterdam. In 1923, his parents moved to Hilversum, where they lived at Dalweg 3. In the years 1937-1938, Nol briefly worked as an office clerk in Rotterdam, but he later went to Amsterdam to study medicine, like his older brother Jozef. Nol had two brothers, his older brother Jozef (Joop) and his younger brother Francis Barend (Frans). Their parents survived the war by going into hiding. According to family stories, Nol and his brother Frans gave themselves up to the Germans to save another family.
