Hartog Tertaas was a son of Mozes Tertaas and Rebecca Leeda. He married 15 May 1919 in Amsterdam Clara Huijsman, a daughter of Machiel Huijsman and Jacomina Frankfort.
Hartog was born in a family with seven children. Two of them survived the war. His other siblings, Elisabeth, Benjamin, Philip and Gidion, have been killed all in the Shoah.
