Biography

About Elisabeth Rosenbaum-Winter.

Elisabeth Winter, born 1 February 1919, was a daughter of Levie Winter and Roosje van Duren. Her mother passed away 20 June 1919 and presumably, baby Elisabeth has been accommodated then with one of the Van Duren families in Arnhem. Her father and his three other children then left for Düsseldorf where he remarried Else Vasen,(most likely in 1921). However after some years of marriage they divorced in Düsseldorf in 1926.

It is not unlikely that Elisabeth has married Walter Rosenbaum even before October 1942. He was born in 1908 in Raesfeld (Germany) as son of Moses (Max) Rosenbaum and Johanna Terhoch. Since March 1941 Walter lived in Varsseveld. Not known is whether the couple lived together or separate; Elisabeth was registered in Arnhem at the address Emmastraat 36 and according the registration card of the Jewish Council, her last known addres was Markt 5 in Arnhem. In March 1941, her (future?) husband lived in Varsseveld at the address C 44.

From other data of the archive of the Jewisch Council, Elisabeth Winter as well Walter Rosenbaum were deported to Westerbork between 3 and 5 October 1942. They were both put on transport to Auschwitz 16 October 1942. This transport included 1710 deportees in total, of whom in Kozel, located about 80 km west from Auschwitz, where 570 men between 15 and 50 years were forced to leave the train – among them also Elisabeth’s spouse Walter Rosenbaum. They were employed as forced laborers in the surrounding satellite camps of Auschwitz. Those, who remained in the train, among them Elisabeth Rosenbaum-Winter, were further transported to Auschwitz and on arrival 19 October 1942 immediately killed. Her husband Walter Rosenbaum ended up as forced laborer in the Extern Command of Brobek were he lost his life 20 March 1943.
