About Herman Isidor de Lieme

Herman Isidor de Lieme was a son of Meijer de Lieme (commercial traveller in paper ware and chazzan in among others the Joodse Invalide in Amsterdam), and Anna Rachel Italie. He married at age 23 on 14 April 1929 in Hoogeveen the 19-year old Bettje Polak, a daughter of Salomo Polak and Klara Nathans.

Herman Isidor was born into a family with four children. One little brother Asjer died in 1900. Only 3 months old. Also his little brother Nathan died very young in 1901. He was only 1 year old. His sister Jansje however has been killed in 1943 in Sobibor. Self he has been killed in Auschwitz.

Herman Isidor de Lieme was a religious teacher and became later the chief cantor of the synagogue in ‘s Hertogenbosch. Since 1928 he was also the secretary of the N.I.G. community of Den Bosch. At his registration card of the Jewisch Council was taken down among others that "he had a good health and it was extra emphasized that he was an excellent administrator and more than suitable to be a leader".

Herman and his wife Bettje went into hiding, separate from their children, but they were betrayed. On 28 November 1943 Herman and Bettje arrived in Camp Westerbork, where they had to stay in barack 67. On 25 January 1944 both were deported to Auschwitz where Bettje was killed immediately upon arrival there on 28 January 1944. Herman self lost his life on 31 May 1944.
