Bertha Menko studied medicine in Leiden, where she sat for her medical finals on 13 June 1930. She specialized in pulmonary ailments and opened a practice as a lung specialist at 63 Daendelsstraat in The Hague, where she lived with her father Isidor Julius Menko, a widower.
