Biography

About Simon Boekbinder

Simon Boekbinder lived with his three sisters – and before that also with his mother – on Gedempte Gracht. Simon's sisters had a delicatessen on Wagenstraat. The Boekbinder family was observant and belonged to The Hague’s Ashkenazi Jewish Community. They attended the synagogue in Wagenstraat, where Simon was cantor.
Simon was also a travelling salesman for the firm of Van den Burg in Rotterdam. He traded in cleaning products, gifts and toys. During the war, Simon carried on trading from his fiancée’s home in Lekstraat, The Hague. Simon refused to go into hiding, since he wanted to join his sisters, who had already been deported.
