Henri Roos was the son of Salomon Roos and Anna van der Sluis. He grew up in Meppel. After primary school he attended the electrical engineering division of a trade school. After that, he took the training course for makers of technical instruments at the Kamerlingh Onnes Instituut in Delft. During the war, he worked in Leiden as an instrument-maker.
