In the First World War Gouda Frijda worked together with a group Dutch nurses at the eastern front. There she stood under the leadership of the surgeon dr. Esser. She is mentioned in the boek of Ton Nelissen: Het tomeloze leven van Johannes Esser (Amsterdam 2002)
