About Majer Landau

Majer Landau studied at the Talmudic Seminary in Krakow. In 1919 he went to Berlin, where he wanted to continue his studies. There he met Dr. B.L. Ritter, who took him to Rotterdam, where he was appointed to be a teacher at the Beth Hamidrasj. Because of his great knowledge he was often consulted by the Dutch Chief Rabbis.

Rabbi Majer Landau was from his arrival in Rotterdam in 1928 till the bombardment of the city in May 1940 - which changed the prayer house into ruins - the spiritual leader of the Galicianer chewresynagogue at the Hofdijk. He was a member of the Rabbinate of Rotterdam. For Landau and the other deceased rabbis and chief rabbis of Rotterdam twice a year the yizkor is said in the synagogue, on the Shabbat before Shavuot and on the Shabbat before Tisha be-Av (the fasting and mourning day on the ninth day of the month Av).
