Barend Gosschalk was a son of Joël Gosschalk, butcher in Dieren and Beeltje Levie. He went to The Hague on 16 March 1877. After his mother passed away on 15 February 1866 his father went to Deventer on 2 March 1867. Barend stayed behind with his grandfather Samuel Levije and aunt Mietje Levije.
