Anna Spiro, daughter of Jacob Spiro and Sientje Spiero, was born in Antwerp. She worked as servant and as packer. On 2 September 1925 she married in The Hague to Hessel Lelijveld, fruit merchant. The couple had four children: Samuel, Sientje, Hartog en Jacques. The three eldest children were sheltered at the Jewish orphanage of The Hague.
