Gertrud Spanier was a daughter of Moritz Spanier and Helene Lehmann.

Gertrud Spanier grew up in Berlin. Before 1933 she moved to Amsterdam where she found employment at de Bijenkorf department store.
At some point in the thirties, Gertrud Spanier received a suitcase filled with clothes from her brother. Her brother had plans to come to Amsterdam as well. Gertrud Spanier didn't meet her brother, he commited suicide.
