Samuel van Cleef owned two cheese warehouses in Amsterdam. In 1941, Van Cleef lost direct control of his businesses, and the occupying forces appointed a Verwalter who sold the warehouses. During the winter of the famine (1944-1945) most of the contents of the warehouses were looted. All the wood, from cheese boards to scaffolding, was taken away for use as firewood. After the war, the heirs fought for years to recover their possessions. Samuel van Cleef's life insurance company did not pay until 1997.
