Salomon Joël was a son of Meijer van der Horst and Rebekka de Hartogh. He married in Amsterdam on 6 January 1932 to Rachel Weddige, daughter of Louis Raphael Weddige and Rosette van Biene.
Salomon Rachel divorced on 20 August 1942. They had two sons, Louis Raphael and Meijer. All died during the war.
