Joseph Bril was a son of David Bril and Klaartje Degen. On 1 October 1919 he married in Amsterdam to Johanna Cornelia van Smirren but divorced her on 27 March 1931. He remarried in Amsterdam on 7 April 1937 to Angelica Rebecca Wortelboer, daughter of Issachar Wortelboer and Betje Bleekveld.
