Betje van Engel originally was from the town of Deventer. Her fatjer Benjamin van Engel (1823-1884) was a butcher there. Later, Betje's brothers took over the shop.
Betje was the widow of Hartog (aka Hertog) van Stratum (1854-1928). He was burried at the Jewish cemetery in Muiderberg. Betje continued to live in the house at the Plantage Kerklaan. She and Hartog had one child, who was married and lived at another address.
