Samuel Berkelo was married to Esther Pels. The couple had five children who all died during the war. Esther Pels died in 1901.
Samuel Berkelo subsequently married Betje Gans. They had six children. Four of these children, among whom Philippus, did not survive the war. A daughter Anna died in 1907 at the age of two months.
