Biography

About Martha Sigaar and Hartog Engelsman

Martha Sigaar, daughter of Meijer Sigaar and Sara de Leeuwe, married 22 July 1942 in Amsterdam Hartog Engelsman, son of David Engelsman and Naatje Presser. Unfortunately the married couple lived separate with their own parents: Martha at Transvaalstraat 82 II and Hartog at Maritzstraat 9 III in Amsterdam.

Martha’s registration card at the Jewish Council does not show anything about internment at Westerbork or the date of her deportation; it is possible that she faced the same fate as her husband Hartog Engelsman. The registration card of Hartog Engelsman of the Jewish Council shows that he was sent to concentration camp Vught mid April 1943 and 8 June 1943 deported from Camp Vught via Westerbork to Sobibor. Upon arrival there 11 June 1943, he was immediately killed. Also Martha Engelsman-Sigaar was killed in Sobibor 11 June 1943.

City Archive of Amsterdam, archive cards of Martha Sigaar and Hartog Engelsman and the file cabinet of the Jewish Council, registration cards of Martha Engelsman-Sigaar and Hartog Engelsman.
