Hartog Schelvis was born in Amsterdam on saturday 26 August 1893. At the age of nineteen he married Saartje Kornalijnslijper. The couple had seven children, among whom Branca. One daughter died in October 1916 when she was one year old. Saartje Kornalijnslijper died on Saturday 21 September 1929. One child of Hartog Schelvis and Saartje Kornalijnslijper survived the war.
