Samuel Granaat was a son of Hijman Granaat and Keetje Tafelkruijer. He married Marianne à Cohen in 1919 in Amsterdam.

Together with a brother Samuel Granaat ran the ironware shop firm H. L. Granaat on the Oude Schans 11 in Amsterdam. The brothers had taken over the shop from their father in 1911. Samuel's brother survived the war. The firm still exists.
