Fokeltje van der Kaars was the daughter of Emanuel Mozes van der Kaars (a merchant, sexton and shomer) and Judith Salomons de Jong. She was a midwife. In November 1892 she married Salomon Nathan de Metz in Leeuwarden. The couple had two children, who both survived the war.
