Joel van Essen was the son of Julius van Essen and Vrouwtje Frank. He had an older brother Salomon Joel van Essen who had joined the Deventer "Einzelhachsjara" and married Duifje Denneboom in 1942. Joel arranged hiding places for the mother of Duifje and her two sisters in Zeist. Joel also was in hiding in Zeist but was betrayed. The mother and sisters of Duifje survived the war.
