Elie Valensi had the French nationality. Around 1919 he married in Tunis. Shortly afterwards Elie and his wife moved to Paris were their two children were born. In the early nineteen-thirties the family moved to Schiedam. With help from the French ambassee his wife and children were evacuated to Casablanca in 1940. Elie Valensi stayed in The Netherlands and tried to find housing with a friend in Gouda.
