Salomon van Engel was a son of Daniel van Engel and his 2nd spouse Sara Frank. He married in Amsterdam on 4 June 1914 to Aaltje Kleerekoper, a daughter of Isaac Kleerekoper and Judic Rebecca Bachra. Aaltje Kleerekoper has survived the Holocaust.
From a previous marriage of his father to Francisca Grunwald, two half-brothers were born: Mozes Aron van Engel and Nathan van Engel.
After the death of his mother in 1895, his father married for the 3rd time to Johanna Grünewald and from that marriage, a third halfbrother was born: Isidor van Engel.
