Herman van Esso was the son of Mozes van Esso and Kaatje Blom. On 22 February 1927 he married Rebekka Klaartje Vorst, the daughter of Samuel Vorst and Flora Henriëtte Hoornstra. Herman van Esso (known as Harry) ran his father-in-law Samuel Vorst's hide and skin business. The Van Essos lived in the bungalow 'De Veenhut' at the Loosdrechtse Plassen. They had no children.
