Simon de Vries was the son of Israel de Vries and Lea Simons. He was a cattle dealer and butcher in Winschoten.
Simon de Vries was first married to Carolina Leeraar. After she died in 1920 he married Clara de Leeuw in Amsterdam. She died in 1935.
