Hartog Cohen (known as Herman) was a grandson of Melanie Seraphina Hoffmann and a son of Rosaline Vega and Mozes (Maurits) Cohen. He lived in Rotterdam but he came often to his grandmother to stay with her, where he was allowed to play and study on her piano. During such a stay, they were all arrested on 19 December 1942.
