About Abraham Delmonte and his family

Abraham Delmonte was a son of Emanuel Delmonte and Betje Mendels. The family resided in Amsterdam were he, his two brothers Jacob and Salomon and his sister Mina were born. His father Emanuel Delmonte however passed away on 8 November 1918 and he was interred two days later in the Portguese Jewish Cemetery Beth Haim at Ouderkerk a.d. Amstel. 

His sister Mina married Leon Levi on 28 July 1937 in Amsterdam and they had two children. All have been killed on 4 June 1943  in Sobibor.

His brother Jacob married 6 August 1941 Grietje Nunes Cardozo; they had a son Emanuel on 24 march 1943, who has survived the Holocaust by hiding. Jacob and his wife Grietje however have been killed in Auschwitz.

Abraham’s brother Salomon lived with his mother and was killed in Auschwitz too, already on 11 August 1942. His mother Betje Delmonte-Mendels lost her life on 14 September 1942, also in Auschwitz.

When Abraham was two years old, he was placed on 27 September 1910 as fosterson in the family of Betje Delmonte-Mendels brother, Emanuel Mendels and Elsje Davidson who had no children and resided in Wolvega. Abraham stayed the rest of his life with them in Wolvega and worked before the war as a bookkeeper in the export slaughterhouse of his fosterfather Emanuel Mendels.

Abraham Delmonte (also known as Abram Mendels) was the fosterson of Emanuel Mendels and his wife Elsje Davidson. When the German troups invaded the Netherlands in May 1940, he served as a sergeant with the guards. He was stationed in Amsterdam. After the capitulation of the Netherlands, he took his own life on 15 May 1940. He is buried in the Portuguese-Jewish cemetery in Ouderkerk at the Amstel.

In June 1940, an obituary was placed in the Nieuw Israëlietisch Weekblad for Abram Mendels. Abram Mendels died in the Military Hospital in Amsterdam. He was 32 years old when he died.
