Samuel van Gelderen was a son of Abraham van Gelderen and Mietje Zilverberg. He married 3 April 1940 in Amsterdam to Saartje Bollegraaf, a daughter of Hartog Bollegraaf and Willemina Salomon. The couple had no children.
When his mother died on 19 April 1931, his father remarried on 7 December 1932 in Amsterdam to Saartje van Gelder. His father passed away in October 1939.
Samuel had four sisters who have survived the war. His other siblings, Betje, Rebekka, Godard and Louis have been killed during the Holocaust.
